PIP: A close collaboration between Crossrail, London Underground, Network Rail and TfL to create a truly integrated Paddington station that offers a superior passenger experience with easy interchanges. The £100m project lead by Carillion includes:
• A new Hammersmith & City line station which eased over-crowding. The new station provided space for future growth in passenger numbers, enhanced quality of access, interchange and ambience.
• An improved new pedestrian entrance from the canal towpath to both Paddington mainline station and the new LU station.
• A new taxi facility on the east of the existing station with access to the mainline station by lifts and escalators.
• A new taxi access ramp from Bishop’s Bridge Road.
• Provision for a future commercial development above the new Hammersmith & City line station and the site adjacent to the existing canal towpath.
PIP was completed in 2013


Fourway provided RIBA design stages C to F for all the station communication systems including a new station management system. We provided the systems engineering including integration and assurance for PA, customer information, CCTV, OPO, Help Points, telephony and radio. We also designed and developed the station management system. We managed the interfaces with critical PFI designers such as LU Connect, Prestige, Powerlink, LUIM and Telephone Services. Throughout the process we maintained close liaison with other design participants such as architectural and E&M disciplines to ensure a fully co-ordinated end product. There was also regular consultation with construction managers to ensure focus stayed on buildability. Other key features included:
The design had to cope with interim stages with inter-connection between new and legacy systems this included designing the complex temporary staging and permanent control room.
The design provided effective control over high risk migration of systems which needed to be operational at all times.
High grade deliverables were produced showing detailed connectivity, setting out detail, wiring diagrams, equipment assembly. This ensured both procurement and installation were tightly controlled.
Throughout the process Fourway achieved very tight timescales through proactively managing all dependencies within the wider design team.

Control Room
Fourway implemented the control room relocation. This involved undertaking multiple system over and back testing including co-ordinating the testing of 3rd party assets to provide confidence there would be no system outages during the migration.

Station Management System
Delivering the station management system, Fourway undertook a requirements definition process which involved consultation with LU stakeholders. From this an outline design scope was produced to enable procurement of the most suitable software.
